- Summary
- To raise public awareness on how to break down all barriers, from the builders of the buildings to the people themselves, the project of totally accessible environments is promoted based on the principles of Universal Design. This process aims to ensure that each person receives services and spaces while respecting their cognitive capacity and specific needs. Another important aspect is the role of the National Observatory on the condition of people with disabilities, established to ratify the UN Convention on the rights of people with disabilities. The strategy is also supported by the ministerial commission dedicated to the analysis of problems relating to disability in the sectors of cultural heritage and activities. The process is integrated through various local and national institutions, such as the Council of the Associations of the Permanent Observatory for the integration of pupils with disabilities and the MIUR. Furthermore, the design of inclusive environments is developed by various working groups, including the Office for the Support of Accessible Tourism, the Architectural Barriers and Accessibility of Ships and Ports Working Group, and Division 2 of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport. Particular attention is paid to the work projects of the UNICT 033 GL 32 Group on the usability of the built environment and the collaboration of groups such as ADR Assistance for Rome airport, railway and aviation activities, with the participation of other organizations in the sector and for education.
